ABOUT THE BOOK

The aim of writing this book is to provide an insight into the TQM philosophies, concepts, tools, systems and awards. As such, it gives a logical, integrated and complete picture of TQM philosophy rather than its partial view on a particular aspect. This book is composed of Four Parts containing Twenty Chapters. Each Part includes a few Chapters which are progressively developed and logically interwoven as follows.

Part I deals with TQM philosophies and concepts. It also gives a synthesized view of TQM factors and elements. Part II deals with transformation strategy of TQM philosophy into practices through application of tools and techniques. PART III deals with quality and its management systems including ISO 9000:2000 International Quality Management System. Part IV presents the complete picture of TQM philosophy as prestigious national quality award models for most countries of the world.

HEC reviewers have recommended it for postgraduate level in all professional disciplines; like Engineering, Business, Social and Medical Sciences etc. However, undergraduate students can use it as reference book and can benefit a lot from its study. It is also considered suitable for researchers, working professionals, academia and practitioners working in the field of quality and its management system.

The contents of this book are based on the research knowledge of the author of his PhD degree in TQM award models and also his experiences in teaching, writing, analysis, evaluation and work practices in the field of TQM for almost a decade.


Pakistan National Quality Award (PNQA)

The backbone of any country is the industry. In our case it is the lifeline, which is necessary for the growth. After year 2005 we shall be competing with modern technology and systems from across the world. We need to uplift our industrial sector to face the upcoming post WTO challenges and to make our industries more competitive in terms of quality and productivity. Therefore, for improving the quality of Pakistani products and services, it is essential to regain the competitive position. The intent of the PNQA is to promote awareness of productivity and its impact on competitiveness, understanding of the requirements for excellence in quality and sharing of information on successful strategies and on benefits derived. The criteria developed in such a way that result orientation and customers are main focus.

Overall, the PNQA criteria provide an integrated, value-oriented framework for the design, implementation, and assessment of a process for managing the performance of all operations.

PNQA is the outcome of comprehensive research work and efforts by Dr Nawar Khan. PNQA was launched in May 2005 by the Chairman HEC. It is still passing through the dynamic phase of establishment. NPO of ‘Ministry of Industry, Production and Special Initiatives’ is the ultimate custodian of this prestigious NQA along with other stakeholders and partners from private sector, like Federation of Pakistan Chamber of Commerce and Industry (FPCCI). Its first ever-annual assessment and award ceremony is expected in year 2007.
